What on earth are you on about?

Common terms explained

Aplix
Fastener like Velcro but longer lasting and softer.
Nappi Nippa
A fierce looking device that is quite ingenious. It is used to pull the nappy together. Tiny hooks on each of the 3 ends attach to the cloth to fasten it. Really quick once you have used it once or twice. The final position should be in the shape of a Y. See the picture of the fluffle with Nippa Fastening. Nappi Nippa is actually a brand name but is used quite commonly to describe the device.
Wrap
This is the outer waterproof cover to keep your lap dry! In the “olden” days they were known as plastic pants but have come a long way since then. They are usually fastened with poppers or Aplix, made from PUL (see later), fleece or wool. All these fabrics are breathable so ensuring it doesn’t get too hot & sticky inside.   The fit around the waist and legs is soft and contrary to what you may think does not have to fit too tightly. As long as no nappy is peeping through you will be OK
Birth to potty
More like HOW DOES THAT WORK?   Usually an ingenious system of poppers allows you to fold the top down and fasten the sides very small or large so that you can use the same nappy right from birth through to potty training (toddler). See the birth to potty section in the nappies.
Booster
This is a piece of absorbent material (usually 3 layers) that fits inside a pocket nappy to provide the filling or can be added to any other nappy to provide extra padding.
Liner
Not strictly necessary but it does help to collect the poo! Either use disposable or washable. Disposable liners may not be biodegradable or flushable. It’s best to check before purchase if you are concerned. Washable liners are made from fleece to help keep the moisture away from the baby's skin.
Pocket Nappy
Either consists of the outer waterproof layer and the inner fleece lining or a layer of fabric and the liner. Either way it needs to be stuffed with a booster to provide absorbency. Some nappies are complete already but provide a pocket to add extra protection for night time or heavy wetters.
Shaped (sized)
These nappies are shaped to make them easy to use and come in various sizes, thus providing a much more accurate fit than the birth to potty versions. The main difference is in the gusset which can be quite wide on the birth to potty versions. These nappies are usually provided with Nippa, popper or Aplix fastening.
Wet-pailing
Soaking nappies in water
Dry-pailing
Leaving the dry but soiled nappies in a bucket without any cleansing products.
PUL
Polyurethane laminate. A soft, breathable but waterproof fabric used for outer wraps over cloth nappies.
