Stuffable nappy system Nappies
These are nappies that have the waterproof layer integral to the nappy. They are pocket style nappies comprising a waterproof outer layer and fleece inner layer with a pocket to insert fabric for absorbency. Usually a specifically designed insert is used but terry or muslin fabric can be folded and used instead.
To summarise you will need a stuffable nappy, an insert (maybe 2 for extra padding) and some liners (either paper roll or fleece)
2-part nappies
These are fabric nappies that require a waterproof outer layer (see wraps). There are 4 basic styles.
- Fitted nappies are as the name implies fitted to the baby. They are available in sizes (usually up to 3 sizes) and in a variety of fabrics. See this link for an example
- Birth to Potty nappies are designed to fit from birth to potty. They usually use a system of poppers to turn from small to larger nappies. Very economical option. See this link for an example
- Pocket nappies require some padding to be added such as an insert or any other absorbent fabric. See this link for an example
- Flat nappies such as terry squares and prefolds. See here for an example
**To summarise you will need a nappy, a wrap, some liners (either paper roll or fleece), and a nappi nippa (depending on nappy selected). Note that when buying more than one nappy you will not need as many wraps because you re-use them. Usually one wrap to three nappies will be sufficient.
Fabrics and Fastenings
The fabrics used for the nappies are mostly natural such as cotton, bamboo or hemp. Some are synthetic and some are a mixture with the majority of the nappy made from cotton and the lining made of fleece. Nappies are fastened with poppers, aplix (Velcro) or nappi nippas.
Wraps (waterproof outer covers)
Available in fleece and PUL (Polyurethane Laminate) with either popper or aplix (Velcro) fastening. They provide the waterproof outer layer when using 2-piece nappies. See here for an example
Liners
Either fleece or disposable bio degradable (100 on a roll). Not all parents use liners but most find them very useful. Example
